new look

after sitting and envying many sites which have been running nicely on better blog standards, i’ve finally converted to wordpress, which is an altogether much more advanced platform than my previous blogger one.

the upside is that being more advanced, i’ll have more control. which i confess i’m a fan of. and that i’ll have more options of changing its look, as opposed to being restricted to blogger templates.

the downside is that i’m now able to display my full incompetence as a page designer, and that i might not be able to make this page very much prettier in the near future — not without extensive trial-and-error-ing, botching the entire site up, and so on.

so if you write to me and tell me that you preferred the previous design, i will bot spam/crash your mail account. just to let you know.

but i get to finally have an RSS feed! yay! yes, blogger had one. but i couldn’t enable it for some reason. so i gave up.

many changes to this site are coming, for one, a big update to my galleries. so this is my bold first step in breaking the procrastination. hurray for me and pardon me while i pat myself on the back repeatedly.

Yay! Wordpress! Well, at this moment, I am looking at all the extra ultra-geeky/techy stuff I’m going to have to learn in the next few weeks to get my site running on.. another uber-cool up and coming web standard (XSL and XSLT!).. I’ll be up hacking away at content management systems and trying to put together something that works, using what knowledge I don’t know. Sigh. It’s a vicious cycle. For more control. And more geeky points.

The one thing I liked most about wordpress over the other blog backends, is the theme control ability, and the plethora of plugins.

By far the coolest plugin, ever:

By the way, you can use a rewrite rule to create clean URLs like vickoho.com/blog/title-of-post, rather than /?p=2. Just create an empty .htaccess file, make it writable (666 or 777), set the rules in wordpress permalink options, and you’re all set.

/that i actually understand what i just said, scares me just a little.

Actually I like the old site better, honestly. But having a PSP is really, really cool.

adri> thanks! will take doubletime to read that when i get back home… heheh. (since i understood about… 75% of that at first glance.)

AIYAH EVERYONE LIKES THE OLD SITE LAH. pooi.

i like this site.. cos it looks like familiar wordpress to me. actually i think what you can do (what i usually do) is to get one of those templates, and then to modify it extensively, keeping the structure but not too much of the look.. :) easiest.

  10. vickihoJune 21, 2005 @ 5:06 pm

popagandhi> but that’s what i did! *wail* i took one of the existing themes but changed mostly everything except the structure…

this is a good time to say pooi again.

shortcut to making a theme look like your own:
    1) change primary font set
    2) replace background image with some repeating gif from squidfingers.com
    3) add/modify unordered list styled with css
    4) err, that’s about it.
    5) find out that the rest of the world doesn’t care (they don’t give a damn even if we had uploaded the blog page by page in a static html file!!).. and start again.

i just spent a couple of days staring at a text editor interface and re-learning textpattern. my eyes are swimming with code..

i realise #5 is perhaps the most applicable… and over and over again i’m realising this. haha. squidfingers.com sounds good — i’ll head over in a bit. :)

oh, and turns out i didn’t need to have an empty .htaccess file. or do i? it seems to work without one. but by saying this i could be jinxing the whole system, so that the minute i click “submit”, the entire archive link thing will just fall apart.

  14. popagandhiJune 23, 2005 @ 10:57 am

ah but you see the beauty of ‘advanced’ blogging systems like this is that even if your archives fall apart, they’re still residing in the mysql table - and you can just backup that routinely!

ergh. will stop here. i have developed repetitive stress injury in my right arm. i need to get out more often.
