it’s not about the need, it’s the option
come on. if you’re into tech gadgets, you know it never really is about need. it’s usually about gadgetlust and the occasional showoffiness; at the very least perhaps, it’s about having the option to do some things available to you, regardless of whether you’d ever envision yourself calling upon that.
so i finally caved. two weeks after working in a moderately-consumer-techy environment, i’m consumed (hmm, pun unintended) by the dilemma of which PDA-phone to get. yes, i’ve let go of the 3G idea for the moment, partially because of how pricey the phones are (the PDA-phones are in the same range, yes, but they do moooore) and mainly because even if i did get a 3G phone, it might be a while before i had anyone to well, 3G with. hence.
so it’s come down to the predictable two: the palm treo 650 and the O2 mini. the rest are pretty much too clunky.
though it’s somewhat got to do with the difference in operating systems the phones employ, i’m torn because it’s easier to SMS with the O2 (using the virtual keypad on the phone), though perhaps easier to enter text with the palm, because of its keyboard. the keyboard is ridiculously tiny, requiring a more than decent nail length that a guitar player (however infrequent i may play these days) simply cannot afford to have.
okay, and the O2 has WIFI capabilities, when expanded. there’s no hope for the treo to do so. so what, now? going online’s important, but is it an essential need? now that i’m not addicted to checking my mail…
ahem.
an update for the PSP firmware (conveniently downloadable) recently came with an internet browser, allowing the PSP to go online. so do i need an O2 that can go online now that my PSP can?
the obvious solution to this dilemma is not to marry a rich man that will provide me the resources to just buy everything as i please, regardless of features overlapping, and the like.
the obvious solution is to marry a super incredibly intelligent japanese man who will easily build me a gadget that will play PSP games, be a phone and PDA, have a keyboard and fold up into a smallish, palm-sized entity—all while solving world hunger and hey, maybe cancer too, if it had enough resources on the fly.

psst, i hear treo 670 will run windows. EWWW!!
3G is over rated, given the terrible state of our telcos, I refuse to even email with my phone. Sigh. and i’m waiting for the iPhone
/zealot
hahaha. good one.
i LOVE this entry. you’re right, it’s all about the gadget lust. i’m feeling it right now.
that’s mainly why i’m going to switch my cellphone carrier today. and. and. and. i can sms internationally without using my spore phone.
anyway. whoohoo. means we’ll talk more.
i can’t wait to see what your japanese husband will look like.
bah. hate your comments box. i forgot to fill in email addy & i had to go “back” to find my msg all gone. fine twas partly my fault. anyways. i like the o2 mini!! & the handwriting option is quite happs, prefer that to typing on keyboard with toothpick thingamajeed ;) *waves o2 mini banner ard* u now which im rooting for..
ps: i like how your title says “it’s not about the need, it’s the option” haha. makes me feel less vain. :P
