Cue Mission Impossible Music

I’m going on an undercover espionage mission tomorrow. Nah, if only it were really as sexy-sounding as that. I’m just going over to Johor Bahru’s dodgier bits to find out if I can get a pirated copy of Windows Vista for a story. The interesting angle lies not in whether I can get it, but what the reason is, if I can’t.

See, our KL-based editor claims he can’t get a single pirated copy in Sungei Wang, a mall known for some of its more, uh, questionable software outlets. And considering most of those tend to stock Microsoft products up the wazoo, it’s pretty curious why they haven’t got any.

Is it the police cracking down on them? Why are they being product-specific? Is it not possible or worth copying Vista? That I’m going to find out.

Of course, this could all be a complete anti-climax, with my luck; I could find copies lining the walls of the first shop I walk into.

I think they just busted a huge manufacturing ops in MY that was supplying a lot of the pirated stuff that’s why. Read it in the news lah

Heh. I was wondering when you would have to work on the recent Vista launch in some way or another.

I do believe that you can and should be able to find a copy somewhere. But it will end up being unworkable. There are many news/forum posts/Digg about how a cracked ISO of Vista was nuked on filesharing networks due to a flipped bit in the CRC.

And even if that copy could be installed, the user will have to content with the Windows Activation check, the Windows Genuine check and the CD-Key check. It’s not looking good for the pirates….

    For now….

    How about investigating this too!

Windows Vista can’t work with iTunes? And Apple telling users to wait till they sort this out?

morph> Actually this has already been fixed, according to this article.

But yep, just another apt that doesn’t really work with Vista on Day 0. I think I will be waiting till at least Service Pack 1 before even considering buying it.

What’s all this hoo-hah about Windows Vista? Is it a new product? My computer says it’s running Windows 3.1. Is Vista newer/better?

  7. FalchionFebruary 7, 2007 @ 11:44 am

Running Windows 3.1 on your brand new Sony Vaio dude?

Man, you must be so loaded that you’re running an OS that doesn’t even use pass 64MBs of RAM let alone the 1Gig your laptop has…

Note to Falchion…Sigh, dear, dear Falchion: When issuing a retort/insult, please make it as unnerdy as possible so as to release the full power of it. Nerdy insults only draw cricket noises and blank stares from all around. :p
