Tetsuya Rave Factory

Oh I’m soooo happy. It suddenly hit me on the drive to work that the Internet must have almost everything, as they say. And by extension, YouTube must have archives of almost every video out there, even TRF, perhaps.

And it did. Who knew? See, the 80s hit me in a different way. 80s music, at least. Right around the time it hit people who were their teens in the 80s, it hit me in the 90s (when I was a teen then), in the form of TRF, a teenybopper, aerobicising, techno music, J-pop band. Thankfully though, it only hit my taste in music and nothing else. I think.

But look, I’m not proud of this, okay? I’m merely marvelling at the massive reaches of YouTube. No, I’m not tapping my feet along. No, you’re just imagining things.

They were a group made up of one singer, one musician (who did everything from writing the music to mixing it all together) and three dancers. That’s a musician-minority in a music group. While this isn’t unusual, and in fact sounds all too much like a lot of the acts we have these days (hello Pussycat Dolls?), it surprisingly wasn’t noticeable. They didn’t make the other group members stand around microphones singing and snapping their fingers; they were dancers, and that’s what they did in the videos.

So now, thanks to the Internet, you can watch their videos too. And we can all not tap our feet along to the music, together.

My favourites:

Update: Some group recently re-did Crazy Gonna Crazy. Ohhh the travesty! Cover thy ears!

The unbridled enthusiasm of everyone here just goes to show how completely infectious and marvellous the phenomenon that is TRF.

    I FEEL THE COLLECTIVE LOVE.
