Yet Another Hip Hop Tune: Genetics Lesson
Although I’ve promised myself many times over never to attempt to comprehend hip-hop lyrics, that I Got it from My Mama song really takes the cake of the moment.
Upon the rapper asking four times where the presumably attractive girl “got her body from”, she replies rhythmically: “I got it from my mama, I got it from my mama, I got it from my mama.”
How is that even remotely sexy? Well, yes logically she got it from her mother. Or perhaps her father. You know, genetically-speaking. Though that wouldn’t be quite as sexy, I imagine.
“I got it from my papa, I got it from my papa…”
But it doesn’t stop there. (As it never does for these songs.) After the impromptu bio lesson, will.i.am (who comes from a long line of grammar-violaters) expounds on that information:
If the girl real fine,
Nine times out of ten,
She fine just like her mama.If the girl real pretty,
Nine times out of ten,
She pretty like her mama. And if her mama real ugly,
I guarantee ya she gon’ be ugly like her mama.
Well that’s just cruel, isn’t it?
Besides, I’ve seen plenty of good-looking parents give birth to some real ugly children.
