Bad Dates Over the Airwaves
Why do dial-in sessions to radio DJs always sound like really bad blind dates?
Honest-to-goodness transcript from a call-in I just heard
DJ: Hey…who’s this calling?
Caller: This is Susan.
DJ: Hey Susan, what’s shaking?
Caller: Uh…nothing…I’m at work, but I’m not working.
DJ: Oooh, naughty naughty! Slacking off, eh?
Caller: No lah…actually yes. Heh. /giggles
DJ: Ah…okay tell us about yourself.
Caller: My friends call me crazy. And hilarious. Yeah, I’m really funny. [pause] I come up with the funniest things.
DJ: [pause] What do you do for fun?
Caller: Analysing people as they walk past.
DJ: Okay, [quickly ending the call] who does this song go out to?
Caller: [rustling paper] Umm, I want this song to go out to all my cool buddies from FM Primary School Class 2C4 Red Team, saying ‘Stay cool and funkyyyyy’…yeah…And party on…rock on too. Yeaaaaaah.
DJ: … Okay let’s just get that song out now.

You know I remember those from when i used to live back home. I never understood the “cool and funky” business because to be “funky” really is to be odd, or to smell really, really bad.
*sigh*
Some things never change.
I never understood why anyone would go dedicating a song to EVERYONE they know, only to end their 60-seconds speech with “and also, to anyone who knows me”. Won’t the last sentence alone suffice?
